Educational careers and chances of Romany pupils attending primary schools in the surrounding the localities of social exclusion

Annotation The main aim of this sociological study is to give a comprehensive overview of educational careers and chances of Romany pupils coming from a social disadvantaged enviroment, studying at different types of primary school. 106 schools and 28 723 children, of which approximately 18% were Romanies, participated in the research. This was one of the first extensive research in Czech republic that aimed at the sources of inequalities in education by comparing Romany and non-Romany pupils. The research focused on themes such as: description and analysis of the main caracteristics of selected schools and educational career of pupils in the first and second grade of primary school; information about the pupils provided by their teachers concerning their family background and parents cooperation; informations about education of Romany children provided by directors of the schools; Romany pupil´s opinions about the role of education in their lives and professional aspirations and ideals. The core of the study presents the results of the sampling analysis of schools and pupils aimed at their school results, school attendance and mobility within different types of school.
