Annotation The diploma thesis focuses on children´s cognitive skills at the time when they start school, and characteristics of the children that influence development of cognitive skills. The theoretical part consists of three parts. The first part explains the concept of school success. The second part describes cognitive abilities of children in the primary school age. It takes a closer look at the beginning of school attendance and difficulties which can be seen due to changes in this period. In the third part, I try to describe the importance of families in this particular period of primary school admission, and the impact of children´s environment on his or her success at school. The practical part of my diploma thesis is formed by a quantitatively oriented research. Its goal was to determine how selected characteristics of the children may affect their success at the beginning of school attendance. Research methods helped me with data collection. Further statistical processing clarified relationship between the selected factors.
